They should also identify any concepts in the text that cause them any level of confusion or prevent their full comprehension of the passage in any way. Allow students to evaluate their finding in pairs or small groups. At this stage, students should be able to answer a variety of questions derived from the text. This will enable teachers to assess their comprehension and their critical analysis of the text. Here there are some examples of broad text- dependent questions (FSUSD n.d.). What does the text say? How does the text say it? • Briefly summarize the passage containing only the main points • What is the main theme of the passage? • List the main concepts in order of importance using evidence from the text • Is there an implied narrative other than what is being directly stated in the text? • What is the layout of the text? • From what point of view is the passage written/ who is the narrator of the text? • Examine the language used (word choice, syntax, tense, imagery) • Does the language chosen impact the tone of the text? What does the text mean? What does the text mean to you? • Has the author written the passage in a biased manner? • What is the author’s perspective of the theme presented in the text? • Can we trust the quality of information presented to us? • What does the author want us to believe after reading the text? • Can you relate to the theme of the passage? • What are your feelings having read the text? • How do you feel about the author/protagonist/supporting characters? • How is this different to other texts you have read before?
